The University of Portsmouth’s Department of Psychology is conducting research at Marwell Zoo in Winchester and Monkey Haven on the Isle of Wight to try to better understand macaque cognition. The monkeys can choose to participate or not, coming and going freely from the study site. Researchers are keen to understand communication in primates, but they also study welfare, considering whether participation in the study adds enrichment to the lives of these captive macaques.
